The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors recently voted to honor former Supervisor and County Sheriff Don Horsley, who died in November 2023 after a lifetime of public service, by naming a new park after him.
The new park, now under construction, will be named Don Horsley County Park at Tunitas Creek Beach.
As Supervisor, Horsley took seriously the concerns of residents who observed throngs of beach goers creating unsafe routes through private land that caused environmental damage to the beach and creek and left huge piles of trash after days of partying.
To protect the land and make it available to the public, he brought together San Mateo County leadership, Peninsula Open Space Trust and the California State Coastal Conservancy, to secure funding to purchase the property and build visitor facilities that were designed with public input and are being constructed.
