Just as you would plan for water, snacks and proper hiking attire, it’s a good idea to think about how you will store your valuables in your car while you are in the park. Unfortunately, thieves see parking lots, even those in parks, as opportunities for theft.

Park staff patrol parking lots, but taking your own precautions is always advised:

• Be aware what is considered of value to thieves: wallets, purses and electronics, including phones and cameras.
• Don’t leave any items visible in cars that could attract attention, including electronic device chargers.
• Be aware that thieves sometimes watch parking lots to see what valuables you place in your trunk.
• Always lock your car.
