Starting at the Sam McDonald Park parking lot, the Forest Loop Trail explores the original environs of Sam McDonald Park before later acquisitions doubled its size. Much of the Forest Loop follows fire roads and provides walk-in access to the Sam McDonald youth camps. A single track section that parallels Pescadero road is steep, climbing 400 feet before descending an even steeper fire road to Chinook youth camp. Horses are allowed only on the fire road section.
