One of the original roads in the area and named after Pete Towne who owned much of the property south of Pescadero Creek road in what is now called Sam McDonald Park. The Towne road connects Sam McDonald parking lot with the Old Haul Road and is the access point for many trails in Pescadero Creek Park. Typical of fire roads it has a steep grade and should be planned for downhill portion of your hike. Old and second growth redwoods as well as oak woodlands and meadows are encountered along the trail. A creek ford at the bottom near the Old Haul Road, washes over polished bedrock, a foot bridge is available only during the summer.

Bicyclists are only allowed on the trail on the 0.8-mile segment of the trail from its junction with Old Haul Road to its junction with Shaw Flat Trail. Bicyclists may continue to Shaw Flat Camp. See the current map.
